“Finding Joy”
September 13 – October 18, 2023
Wednesdays, 5:30-6:45p

We all know that life has its ups and downs. What exactly is the difference between joy and happiness? Happiness refers to pleasurable feelings or emotions that result from a situation, experience, or objects. On the other hand, joy is a state of mind that can be found even in times of grief or uncertainty. We can work on finding joy independent of our circumstances.
The field of neurobiology has researched neurotransmitters that promote positive feelings; i.e. dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, and endorphins. The good news is that changes in our life styles can increase these neurotransmitter levels, and research has shown these changes can strengthen the immune system, decrease stress hormones, decrease pain, relieve depression, and help extend our life.

Using various props to fully support the body, one can relax completely and still experience the benefits of traditional yoga poses. Unlike their traditional counterparts, restorative yoga poses rely on props for proper alignment, rather than muscular effort. With the muscles in a relaxed state, one can hold any given restorative yoga pose for several minutes without strain. Restorative Yoga poses are super relaxing where the “work” of the pose is setting yourself up for maximum comfort and letting go of effort and unnecessary tension.
